We hope all of you are excited about the JALT International Conference this weekend in Tsukuba! The Critical Thinking SIG has been hard at work in the last few weeks making sure we make a big splash at JALT2014, and we look forward to having all of you as a part of all the action.
At JALT2014, we will be showing off the inaugural edition of our brand new journal, Critical Thinking and Language Learning. We will be providing our members who attend JALT2014 with a free copy, before we mail out copies to the rest of our membership in early December. Please find us at our SIG table at the conference for your journal!
You can also see us at our Third Critical Thinking SIG Forum on Saturday at 4:30PM in Room 304. We have a trio of great presentations that we think will provoke discussion on critical thinking in language education. We have attached a flyer for the forum to preview our exciting event, and the full abstracts for each presentation are listed at the end of this post.
Finally, we have a wide variety of critical thinking-related presentations for you to see. Please look at our second flyer so you can plan ahead. We recommend you support these presenters at JALT2014 with your presence and your ideas.
On behalf of all of us in the JALT Critical Thinking SIG, we thank you as always for your support, and look forward to seeing you in Tsukuba this weekend!
Best regards,
The JALT Critical Thinking SIG

Update on JALT National 2014 https://www.jaltcriticalthinking.org/2014/11/09/update-on-jalt-national-2014/ https://www.jaltcriticalthinking.org/2014/11/09/update-on-jalt-national-2014/#respond Sun, 09 Nov 2014 03:45:33 +0000 http://www.jaltcriticalthinking.org/?p=175880925 Hey critical thinkers, a little update to the main conference schedule that should be perfect for challenging us as thinkers and practitioners and people. We have a new plenary speaker - Professor Gerry Yokota of Osaka University. See all the details below. Should be fascinating!! Gerry Yokota: Beyond the Binary: Anime, Gender and the Multicultural Subject Plenary address: Sunday, Nov. 23, 10:25 am - 11:25 am, Main Hall Workshop: Saturday, Nov 22, 5:40 pm - 6:40 pm, Room 300 Japanese anime and manga are fertile sources of material for prompting classroom discussion. But educators are justly concerned about their frequently problematic representations of gender, sexuality and violence. In this plenary talk, I will introduce recent examples from three prominent subgenres (mechas, cyborgs and beautiful fighting girls) and invite you to join me in a border-crossing adventure. Together we will explore how metaphors and symbols in anime are embodied, and often gendered, but not universal, and contemplate the advantage of cultivating a multicultural, multilingual subjectivity as a valuable asset for venturing into borderlands. Gerry Yokota is Professor of English and Contemporary Interdisciplinary Cultural Studies at Osaka University, where she teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in Gender Studies as well as courses on Contemporary Japan for the G30 program. She is also an affiliate of GLOCOL, the Global Collaboration Center at Osaka University, where she is involved in the Community Services Project, focusing especially on the mixed roots community in Japan. Taking the concept of tradition as a bridge between premodern and modern culture, she has recently begun expanding her early work on the representation of women in the medieval noh drama of Japan (as author of The Formation of the Canon of Noh: The Literary Tradition of Divine Authority, 1997, and as editor ofGender and Japanese History, 2 vols., 2000, both published by Osaka University Press) to explore the meaning of tradition in Japanese popular culture. On another note: We will have a copy or two of our new journal at out table during JALT. Drop by, say "hi", and check out the journal. We will also be giving out copies to the first 10 or so non-members who come to the CT SIG Forum. If you have a friend who is interested in CT, then encourage them to attend! See you in a few weeks! ]]> https://www.jaltcriticalthinking.org/2014/11/09/update-on-jalt-national-2014/feed/ 0 This Weekend, JALT National, and more! https://www.jaltcriticalthinking.org/2014/10/08/this-weekend-jalt-national-and-more/ https://www.jaltcriticalthinking.org/2014/10/08/this-weekend-jalt-national-and-more/#respond Wed, 08 Oct 2014 02:36:08 +0000 http://www.jaltcriticalthinking.org/?p=175880915 Hello Critical Thinkers!

A reminder to our members about upcoming events.

Remember that your own CT SIG’s David Gann will be giving a presentation about Text Reconstruction and Critical Thinking this weekend (Oct. 12th) at the Maebashi Institute of Technology in Gunma. You can check out the Facebook page for more information.

If you have ideas you would like to share, WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU! The deadlines for the Tohoku event and JALT National events have passed, but we are always looking for ways to share our members’ ideas! Contact our coordinator (Roehl) at either CTScan.editor@gmail.com or program@jaltcriticalthinking.org with your ideas. We would love to work with you to get you published or presenting.

JALT National is coming up soon! We hope all those in attendance will join us for our CT SIG Forum on Saturday (Nov. 22nd) in room 304 from 4:30 to 6:00. Come, meet some current and future members, strike up a conversation and make some new friends!

The Tohoku event schedule is currently being finalized. If you submitted a proposal, best of luck to you and we will announce who will be presenting soon.

We are looking for academic papers for a potential journal next year!

If you have an idea about critical thinking, a new methodology, research data, a strong opinion, or anything else you would like to share with the world, let us know! Contact our publication officer (John) at publications@jaltcriticalthinking.org (make sure to carbon copy ctscan.editor@gmail as well as we are moving to new email addresses) with your ideas so we can get the ball moving. We hope to start offering more and more avenues for our members to develop professionally. We know you have ideas and we want to share them.

That is all for now. Make sure to drop by our booth at JALT International to say “hi” to the officers in attendance. We look forward to meeting you there.

Critically yours,

The CT SIG executive board
